David Cronenberg and Vincent Cassel Team Up for The Shrouds

David Cronenberg has more in store for movie audiences. He recently talked about his latest release, Crimes of the Future, starring Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, and Kristen Stewart. Cronenberg has another project in the works, The Shrouds, starring Vincent Cassel.

Cronenberg will serve as both writer and director of The Shrouds, about a businessman named Karsh (Cassel) who has an original idea—a device that allows us to communicate with the dead from inside of a burial shroud. Karsh is a widower, and I think it’s safe to assume that his loss inspired him to create the device. After Karsh makes his device and is on the verge of mainstream success, someone vandalizes several graves in his cemetery, including his wife’s. As Karsh looks into the incident and tries to figure out who the culprit is, he’s forced to take another look at his business and his marriage.Vincent Cassel in A Dangerous Method

Cronenberg and Cassel previously worked together on Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method. Cassel has had roles in Ocean’s Twelve, Ocean’s Thirteen, and Black Swan. He started his career in French television and film in 1988, with his breakthrough role in La Haine, released in 1995. He’s had roles in more than 80 films in both France and the United States.

Said Ben Said (SBS Productions) and Martin Katz of Prospero Pictures will serve as producers of The Shrouds. FilmNation Entertainment will oversee international distribution. Variety quoted the following statement, issued by SBS: “We are thrilled to be going on a journey into the newest world from the distinctive imagination of David Cronenberg. His ability to write smart and  unconventional screenplays and then translate them into unique experiences on screen makes him a unique voice in film.”

Filming on The Shrouds begins in March 2023. Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future will be released in the U.S. on June 3rd.
