I Know What You Did Last Summer is one of the slew of memorable mid-’90s slashers, alongside Urban Legend, Scream, and Scream 2. It was followed up by a slightly less successful I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which included a questionable performance from Jables himself. The third in the series, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, is one of the weakest and ugliest films ever made. Recently, in 2019, Amazon decided to reboot the franchise into an eight-episode series that is a bit more based on Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel of the same name.
In a town full of secrets, a group of teenagers are stalked by a mysterious killer a year after a fatal accident on their graduation night.
I Know What You Did Last Summer is executive produced by Neal H. Moritz (producer of the ’96 film), Pavun Shetty (The Boys, Happy!), Michael Clear (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It), Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 3), Craig William Macneill (The Boy, Monsterland), and James Wan (Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring), to name a few. The creative team behind this project is impressively stacked, so that should be a good sign for genre fans.
The cast includes Brianne Tju (Scream: The Series, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged), Ezekiel Goodman (Dragonfly), Ashley Moore (Popstar: Never Stop Stopping), Sebastian Amoruso, Bill Heck (The Alienist, Locke & Key), Fiona Rene (Stumptown), Cassie Beck (Elementary), Brooke Bloom (All the Boys Love Mandy Lane), Chrissie Fit (All My Life), Danielle Delaunay (Baywatch: Panic at Malibu Pier), Spencer Sutherland (Vote for Love), and Madison Iseman (Annabelle Comes Home).
From the images provided and the cast that we know so far, it seems like Amazon is going the route of modern pop horror a la Scream: The Series, Scream Queens, and Riverdale with a more Young Adult flair to them. This isn’t necessarily an issue but could possibly end up being a bit alienating for older fans of the original movie[s]. While the images don’t paint much of a picture of what is to come, we can at least note from the first image provided that the car accident setup looks similar to the first film, and from the palm trees in the second image we may be getting a possible throwback to the resort/island from the second film! It will be very intriguing to see where exactly the show goes, and what homages and callbacks there will be from the initial series.
Below are the teased images for season 1 of I Know What You Did Last Summer, whose first four episodes drop on Amazon on October 15th, and each episode after that will release on Fridays.
