If you’re a Godzilla fan, you’re going to have a great last few months of 2023. Not only is Godzilla: Minus One, the next Japanese Godzilla film, set to hit theaters on December 1, but we’re also going to be getting a new MonsterVerse television show starting in November. Apple TV has finally given Monarch: Legacy of Monsters an official release date, and along with that announcement, the streaming service has also given us a really intriguing teaser trailer.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters takes place sometime after the 2014 Godzilla but presumably before the film’s sequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and it follows two siblings who investigate their family’s connection to Monarch, the secret organization that studies giant monsters in this world. Their search leads them to an army officer named Lee Shaw (played by Kurst Russell in the present and his son, Wyatt Russell, in flashbacks), and according to the official plot synopsis, the show is going to uncover “buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.”
I don’t know about you, but I think that plot synopsis is the perfect middle ground between overly vague and annoyingly spoilery. It tells us just enough to pique our interest and get us excited, but it doesn’t tell us so much that we feel like we already know how it’s all going to play out. I’m really excited to learn more about Monarch and the secrets this organization harbors, so that little bit of info is more than enough to get me hooked.
But if you still need a bit more convincing, the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters teaser trailer should do the trick. Granted, it doesn’t tell us anything else about the plot, but it promises a sense of mystery and intrigue that looks just about irresistible. And of course, you can’t forget about the monsters. This series is going to focus primarily on the human characters, not the titans, but if the trailer is any indication, it’s still going to have enough kaiju action to keep fans satisfied.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is set to debut on Apple TV+ on November 17.
