A few months ago, Legendary and Warner Bros released a plot synopsis for their upcoming sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, and now, we know what the movie is going to be called. The studios put out a brief teaser video revealing the name of the film, and despite some initial reports that it was going to be called Godzilla and Kong, its actual title is Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Admittedly, that’s a bit of a strange name, but if you think about it, it actually makes sense. Remember, at the end of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, after Godzilla defeats Ghidorah and reclaims his spot as the world’s alpha titan, the other titans gather around him and bow down to him as their king. Also, in Godzilla vs. Kong, one of the characters remarks, “Kong bows to no one.”
So for the last two movies, royal imagery has been part and parcel of the MonsterVerse’s mythology. The alpha titan is the king of these creatures, and currently, Godzilla and Kong are the two top dogs. But according to this upcoming movie’s plot synopsis, a new challenger for the throne is about to arise. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is going to see Godzilla and Kong team up to face a deadly threat that neither titan can defeat by themselves, so naturally, their joint claim to the title of “king” (and, by extension, their “empire”) is going to be in jeopardy.
I’m not sure what that threat is, but if I had to guess, I’d say it’s probably going to be a new monster created just for this movie (and possibly not of this earth!). The only two monsters from the Godzilla pantheon that I can see fitting that description are Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla, but we’ve already seen them in the MonsterVerse. What’s more, the teaser video Legendary and Warner Bros put out gives us a glimpse of what seems to be their mysterious new opponent, and it doesn’t look like any monster I recognize from the Japanese films.
But of course, we won’t know for sure until we see the movie, and for that, we’re going to have to wait a while. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is set to hit theaters on March 15, 2024, so for now, check out the teaser video and see the cool title reveal for yourself.
