Summoning the Spirit Trailer Promises an Intriguing Subgenre Mashup

One of the best things about being a horror fan is seeing two of your favorite subgenres combined seamlessly in a single movie. For example, Hellraiser mixes demons and body horror in a really cool way, and the REC films blend supernatural horror with zombies to create a one-of-a-kind viewing experience you won’t get with any other franchise. These kinds of subgenre mashups usually make for some really fun treats, and now, it appears that we might be getting another good one really soon. Dark Star Pictures just dropped a trailer for their upcoming Bigfoot/cult film Summoning the Spirit, and it looks like a really clever take on the Sasquatch mythology.

Summoning the Spirit follows a couple named Carla and Dean who buy a house in a remote forest to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, but as luck would have it, they’ve simply jumped from the frying pan into the fire. See, they soon learn that the land they’re living on is also home to a sinister cult, and the group’s leader claims to have a psychic connection with a deadly creature that lives in the surrounding area.

I don’t know about you, but I find that premise super compelling. I love monsters and cults (in movies—not in real life!), so I’m really intrigued by the idea of combining those two kinds of horror into a single film.

Then, when you add in the trailer, Summoning the Spirit becomes even more of a must-watch. The cult seems just as creepy and mysterious as you’d expect, and the Bigfoot in this movie looks absolutely brutal. In a word, it appears that Summoning the Spirit is going to totally nail both of its subgenres, so I, for one, can’t wait to see it.

And thankfully, the wait isn’t going to be too long. Summoning the Spirit is set to hit VOD on August 8, so it’ll be here in just about a month.
