Skull Island Trailer Teases an Awesome Monster Mash

Shared universes were all the rage in movies and TV a few years ago, but their popularity has died down a bit recently. They’ve proven notoriously difficult to create, so a lot of them have crashed and burned pretty fantastically (I’m looking at you, Dark Universe!). But there have been a few notable exceptions, and one of the best is Legendary’s MonsterVerse. It’s managed to combine Godzilla, Kong, and a whole host of other awesome kaiju into one universe, and the next chapter in the franchise is coming sooner than you might think. A new animated TV show called Skull Island is set to hit Netflix at the end of June, and the streaming service has just dropped a brief trailer for it.

At this point, plot details are pretty scarce, but as the title suggests, Skull Island takes place in King Kong’s (in)famous homeland, the titular Skull Island, and it’s going to include a whole boatload of other monsters for Kong to fight. Beyond that, we don’t know anything too substantial, but the way I see it, that’s perfectly fine. Sure, the humans in kaiju films and shows are important, but we don’t need to know all the story details in advance. I, for one, am more than happy to learn about the plot as it unfolds before my eyes, so as long as the monsters look good, I’m all in.

And if the trailer is any indication, Skull Island is definitely going to deliver on that front. Granted, it’s pretty short, so it can’t show us too much, but the little bit we do see is really promising. It teases a handful of super cool kaiju that are brought to life with top-notch animation, so as a huge giant monster fanatic, I absolutely can’t wait to see this show.

Skull Island hits Netflix on June 22.
