The cancellation of The Vampire Diaries spin-off, Legacies, marked the end of the Vampire Diaries Universe, which lasted for 13 years on the CW. However, executive producer Julie Plec recently hinted that there may be more in store for Vampire Diaries fans in the future.
Entertainment Weekly quotes Plec “We had a plan to keep the franchise on the air until the next installment, which exists in our brains, but not on the page yet […] There will be another one,” Plec added. “We’re a little sad, we’re going to take a beat, but yeah, there’s more ideas. There’s more to do.”
The Vampire Diaries follows the misadventures of supernatural beings in the fictitious town of Mystic Falls, Virginia. The series includes not only vampires but witches and werewolves, hybrids, and just about anything else a creative mind could cook up in the supernatural realm. The series began airing on the CW in 2009 and ran for eight seasons. The Vampire Diaries spawned two spin-offs: The Originals (2013-2018), which aired for five seasons, and Legacies, which aired for four seasons. Plec created Vampire Diaries and served as executive producer on all three shows.
The Originals picks up with the story of the Mikaelson family in New Orleans, led by vampire-werewolf hybrid Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan), as they become entangled in supernatural politics. Legacies began in 2018, and continues with the story of Klaus’s teenage daughter, Hope (Danielle Rose Russell), described as a tribrid, descended from powerful vampire, werewolf, and witch bloodlines as she attends the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. The school’s goal is to teach supernatural beings to control their abilities and impulses.
There are no specific details on what Plec may have in mind. According to TV Line, Plec said that the end of Legacies is the end of one chapter” […] but we can use it to launch the beginning of another chapter, which is ultimately what we want to do when all is said and done.”
“There’s absolutely hope for the future,” Plec added. “Brett [Matthews] and Kevin [Williamson] and I have an idea percolating in our brains that we just haven’t had the time to put down on the page yet. But we definitely want to do another branch of the tree. It’s just a matter of when, I guess.”
