The Long Night Trailer Promises Creepy, Supernatural Folk Horror

I think we can all agree that cults are scary. When people cling to dangerous beliefs with an unyielding fanaticism, the end result is never good, and the horror genre has a long and hallowed history of turning that fact into cinematic gold. The trailer for The Long Night continues that tradition in just about the creepiest way possible, and it adds a further twist that’s literally the stuff of nightmares.

This film is about a woman named Grace who travels with her boyfriend to her childhood hometown to find the parents she never knew, and while there, they encounter a deadly cult that turns their lives into a living hell.

While that brief plot description sounds like pretty standard folk horror fare, the trailer for The Long Night promises so much more. Most notably, this cult has genuine supernatural powers, so Grace and her boyfriend look like they don’t stand a chance. I have no idea how or even if they’re going to escape this nightmarish ordeal, but I sure as hell can’t wait to see them try.

But don’t get the wrong idea, this movie does not look like a one-trick pony. Even when nothing supernatural is going on, there’s still a sense of dread that permeates just about every frame of this trailer and it’s absolutely chilling.

For example, when the main characters go into that house at the beginning, you can immediately tell that something isn’t right. It’s tough to put your finger on what exactly it is, but everything from the music to the decor to the fact that nobody’s home comes together in just the right way to let you know these people are headed down a very dangerous path.

The rest of the trailer for The Long Night is just as eerie, and when you combine it with the terrifying supernatural element, you get an intriguing subgenre mashup that I for one will not be able to pass up. I love both supernatural horror and folk horror, so when a film promises to combine them this skillfully, it rockets to the top of my to-watch list.

I absolutely can’t wait to see this movie, and thankfully, it’s going to be available very soon. The Long Night hits VOD platforms and select theaters on February 4.
