The finale of Agatha All Along has finally arrived, concluding the coven’s harrowing journey down The Witches’ Road. “Follow Me, My Friend / To Glory at the End” opens with Alice’s haunting acceptance of her own death as she gazes upon her corpse, awaiting Rio/Death to collect her soul. Meanwhile, a grieving Jen struggles with losing Lillia in the previous episode and discusses the shocking revelation of Rio’s true identity with Billy. Agatha and Rio/Death soon clash over Billy’s fate, with Rio/Death condemning Billy as an “abomination” and accusing him of “stealing a second life,” which threatens “the sacred balance.” To restore this balance, Rio/Death demands Billy’s soul, though he must willingly surrender it. Agatha strikes a desperate deal: she will deliver Billy in exchange for Rio/Death to cease pursuing her. However, as the coven reunites, they find themselves back where they began in episode two, now realising they must defy The Witches’ Road’s rules to reach their final trial.

Transported to a futuristic morgue hauntingly similar to Agatha’s basement, the coven members ponder their next steps. During their discussion, Agatha inadvertently reveals she cast the binding spell that has blocked Jen’s magical abilities for a century. Empowered by this knowledge, Jen performs an “un-binding” ritual, regaining her powers and then vanishing, having finally claimed what she sought from the road. Agatha turns to Billy, offering to help him find his brother, Tommy. Though Tommy currently lacks a physical form, Billy can use his abilities to help find one.  During a telepathic journey, Billy sees a boy drowning, destined for death, and reluctantly, he’s able to use him as a vessel for Tommy’s soul. Seeking what he wanted from the road, Agatha faces her final peril alone, narrowly escaping the morgue being engulfed in skulls.

Upon her escape, she’s greeted by Rio/Death. Having reneged on her deal, Agatha must now pay the price. With no magic left, she is no match for Rio/Death, enduring excruciating torture akin to a death of a thousand cuts. Just when all seems lost, Billy emerges in his comic-book-accurate Wiccan costume to save Agatha, allowing her to absorb some of his magical power. With her abilities restored, Agatha is ready to confront Rio/Death. However, despite her valiant efforts, Agatha realises the fight is futile. In an unexpected act of selflessness, she embraces Rio/Death, causing her body to decay rapidly as she merges with the earth. Taking Agatha’s brooch, Billy returns home. Once there, he begins to see his room in a new light: a statue of the Wicked Witch of the West, a Ouija board, a poster of Lorna Wu, and a dreamcatcher made of leaves in various shades. Reflecting on Agatha’s past comments during their journey, a devastating realisation dawns on him—he created The Witches’ Road.

Episode 9 – “Maiden Mother Crone”

“Maiden Mother Crone” transports viewers back to the 18th century, right as Agatha is about to give birth. Just as she enters labour, Rio/Death appears, reluctantly there to collect her son’s soul. While she cannot prevent the inevitable, she offers Agatha time with her newborn, which she eagerly accepts. After giving birth to Nicholas Scratch, a twisted scheme unfolds as Nicholas provokes witches, prompting Agatha to slaughter them and absorb their powers. As the years pass, Nicholas begins to question his mother’s motives, wondering if they truly need to kill witches to survive. Throughout their journey together, they bond as Agatha teaches him magic, and they create a song, which would later become The Ballad of the Witches’ Road. However, their bliss is short-lived, as Nicholas’s time on Earth comes to an end, and Rio/Death returns to collect him.

In her grief, Agatha mourns her son, singing their favourite song as a witch approaches Agatha due to the legends of The Witches’ Road having spread among the community; this sparks an idea in Agatha’s mind. With witches believing that she is the sole survivor of the road and possesses the knowledge to fulfil their dreams, she can lull them into a false sense of security, only to antagonise them enough for them to attack, stealing their power in the process—a scheme she continues for centuries. However, during her most recent attempt in episode two, something unexpected occurs: an entrance to the road actually appears. This incident feeds Agatha’s theory that Billy might be the son of the Scarlet Witch, capable of rewriting reality, as seen in Wandavision.

Returning to the present, after Billy’s realisation, Agatha surprises him as a ghost, but their reunion is anything but joyful. Billy, determined to put Agatha to rest for good, returns to her basement to perform a banishment ritual. Agatha clings on desperately, unwilling to face her son Nicholas after all she put him through. However, after agreeing that they could make a formidable team, Agatha and Billy embark on a quest to find Billy’s brother, Tommy.

Easter Eggs and Hidden Details

With this double-bill finale answering all the questions viewers have pondered throughout the series, Easter eggs and hidden details are abundant for keen-eyed viewers:

  • Wiccan’s MCU Debut: While the reveal of Teen as Billy was highly anticipated, viewers couldn’t have predicted that his superhero identity, Wiccan, would make such a striking debut in this series. Donning a costume that stays true to the comics while subtly nodding to the Billy fans have come to know, Wiccan’s arrival teases numerous possibilities for Marvel’s future projects. The decision to introduce Wiccan at this moment not only celebrates Billy’s journey but also hints at his potential in the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe, leaving fans with much to speculate about.
  • The Road of Billy’s Design: The twist that The Witches’ Road is merely a manifestation of Billy’s own immense powers came as a shock, though in hindsight, it starts to make sense. For viewers familiar with his comic origins as the Scarlet Witch’s son, the hidden details in Billy’s room during episode six—a statue of the Wicked Witch, a Ouija board, and various mystical artefacts—were subtle clues foreshadowing his role as the creator of every trial on the road. This revelation transforms his journey from a simple test of endurance into a powerful reflection of his own abilities, creating a haunting and deeply meaningful moment in his story.
  • It Really Was Agatha All Along: True to her character, Agatha has been brewing a sinister scheme from the start, and upon rewatch, the signs that she knew The Witches’ Road wasn’t real become clear. However, the emotional twist that it was Agatha’s son, Nicholas, who helped her create The Ballad of the Witches’ Road during their time together brings a bittersweet layer to her story. The fact that she took this bond with her son and twisted it into something manipulative and cruel reveals the depth of her moral corruption. This transformation of an innocent memory into something depraved highlights the duality of Agatha’s character—a grieving mother and relentless villain who cannot resist her darkest impulses.

As Agatha All Along draws to a close, its influence won’t be forgotten by viewers anytime soon. With its ingeniously crafted narrative, the debut of celebrated comic characters, and a deeper exploration of Marvel’s darker themes, the series holds great potential for future stories and new directions in the MCU.

From acclaimed works like Werewolf by Night to the horror-infused visuals of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marvel has shown it’s no stranger to horror. Across several releases, Marvel has proven its versatility in storytelling, blending elements from various genres into a cohesive universe. With Agatha All Along now joining the ranks as a highly praised horror series, Marvel may be encouraged to delve further into this genre, exploring new depths of horror storytelling that captivate fans further.

Additionally, Agatha All Along brings a great deal to fans of the original comics. The series marks the debut of two renowned characters—Death and Wiccan—whose presence opens a world of potential. For Marvel fans, this is an exciting time as Wiccan embarks on a journey to find his lost brother, Death lingers as an ominous force, and subtle hints of a Young Avengers team begin to take shape. With such rich groundwork laid, there’s no better time to be a Marvel fan, as Agatha All Along promises to influence both the MCU’s horror genre and its future heroes.
