In the last episode of Agatha All Along, the long-speculated reveal of Teen as Billy Maximoff was finally confirmed. Yet, as one question is answered, even more arise around this mysterious character—could there be more to Teen than viewers initially anticipated?

“Familiar by Thy Side” opens three years prior to the events of Agatha All Along, with Teen, then known as William Kaplan, at his Bar Mitzvah. Despite the celebrations, the event is abruptly cut short due to an emergency warning regarding the “Westview Anomaly”—an eerie callback to Wandavision. As the Kaplan family attempts to flee, panic rises, fuelled by Wanda’s sitcom ominously broadcasting over the radio, ultimately leading to a car accident. While William’s parents survive, his injuries turn fatal, and his heartbeat slows to a stop. Yet, just as he dies, William’s body jolts back to life, screaming “Tommy”—revealing that while William Kaplan is gone, Billy Maximoff’s soul has somehow inhabited his body. Disoriented and traumatised from the events of Wandavision, Billy now finds himself trapped in an unfamiliar form, struggling to grasp his new reality and manage his telekinetic and telepathic powers.

Three years later, Billy is still searching for answers about who he is and his connection to Wanda Maximoff’s “Hex.” Confiding in his boyfriend, he shares his belief that the “Hex” was influenced by powerful magic and reveals his plans to meet a former victim of it—none other than Evan Peters’ Ralph Bohner. Ralph discloses haunting details of Wanda’s control over him while also carrying profound guilt about being a “bad influence” on her children. Pushing for answers, Billy uses his telepathic abilities to uncover a crucial piece of the mystery: Agatha Harkness.

With this revelation, Billy begins to piece things together while also uncovering dark truths about Agatha. Learning of The Witches’ Road and the powers it promises, he sets out to find Agatha in hopes of reuniting with his lost brother, Tommy. In a callback to episode one, viewers see Agatha and Teen/Billy’s first meeting from his perspective, this time unclouded by Wanda’s influence.

Back in the present, Agatha pulls herself from the bog where Billy trapped her in the previous episode and confronts him. But rather than anger, she expresses her astonishment, pride, and a twisted sense of admiration for how far he’s come. Yet, Teen doesn’t buy it; he’s made it clear that if they’re to finish The Witches’ Road together, he doesn’t trust Agatha—marking a decisive shift in their power dynamic.

Easter Eggs and Hidden Details

While uncovering further details of Teen’s origins, Agatha All Along once again proves rich with hidden details and Easter eggs. These moments not only address lingering viewer questions but also establish significant connections to the comics, offering exciting nods for dedicated fans:

  • Lillia Cast the Sigil: A lingering mystery throughout the series has been the identity of the witch responsible for casting the Sigil on Teen, which prevents him from revealing his true identity to other “witch-folk.” Fans have speculated it could have been Agatha Harkness, Wanda Maximoff, or even Teen/Billy himself. However, the episode finally reveals that it was Lillia. During one of the three coven cameos, she reads William’s palm and, clearly disturbed by what she sees, casts the Sigil. Was the Sigil a means of protecting Teen from an unknown threat?
  • Teen/Billy’s Boyfriend: Fans of Marvel comics will recognise Wiccan’s (Billy) romance with Hulkling (Teddy Altman) as a key part of his storyline, especially tied to the Young Avengers. The introduction of Eddie in Agatha All Along opens the door to exploring this relationship, though it’s unclear whether Eddie will act as a stand-in for Teddy or carve his own path. Regardless, the potential to develop this romance while laying the groundwork for the Young Avengers adds exciting possibilities for future episodes.

Character Development

The latest instalment of Agatha All Along delves deeper into Teen’s origins, focusing on his evolving character and how his past shapes his current journey. The episode also teases shifts in his relationships, particularly with Agatha, where tensions and power dynamics continue to evolve.

A central theme throughout the episode is identity, a struggle that Teen/Billy faces head-on. Fresh after his reincarnation, viewers witness him traumatised, disoriented, and trapped in an unfamiliar form. This trauma is not something he recovers from quickly. Three years later, Billy confides in his boyfriend, describing his return to the world as coming back as “something different.” His struggle to grasp what this truly means adds complexity to his journey of self-discovery. After intensive research and piecing together his fragmented memories, he begins to uncover the long-suspected truth: he may be Billy Maximoff, the lost son of the Scarlet Witch. The weight of this revelation is profound as Billy grapples with understanding his place within his identity and magical heritage.

Billy’s use of magic is woven deeply into the plot, but it’s also symbolic of his internal conflict. During Wandavision, Billy handled his powers with relative ease, but now, despite his incredible abilities, he struggles with controlling them. He hears the thoughts of those closest to him, which heavily influences how he navigates relationships, adding complexity to his interactions. However, his telekinesis and magical energy are volatile, only surfacing during extreme distress. This lack of control parallels his mother, Wanda Maximoff, whose powers also became increasingly erratic the more mentally unstable she grew. Billy’s instability reflects his emotional journey—his powers act as both a gift and a burden, reflecting his ongoing battle for control over his identity and abilities as a witch.

Perhaps the most significant shift in character development lies in Billy’s evolving relationship with Agatha. What began as a mentorship has now become a battle for power. The tables have turned, with Billy now holding the upper hand. Once the dominant figure, Agatha finds herself needing Billy’s help to complete The Witches’ Road, recognising that, despite her vast knowledge, she is powerless without him. However, this shift in their dynamic introduces tension. As their partnership becomes more strained, it’s difficult to predict how their relationship will look as they move closer to the finale. Will Billy’s newfound power cement his dominance, or will Agatha find a way to regain control?

Fan Reception and Predictions

As Agatha All Along reveals long-awaited answers, fans are buzzing with theories about how these new revelations will shape the rest of the series:

  • Did Billy Create The Witches’ Road?: After his display of immense magical power, speculation is rising about Billy’s possible connection to The Witches’ Road. Some believe he might have actually created or manifested it. Like his mother, the Scarlet Witch, Billy wields reality-warping abilities in the comics, which suggests the road could be a product of his chaos magic.
  • Future Trials: Although the coven has successfully completed three trials (water, fire, and spirit), their journey is far from finished. With at least two trials remaining, viewers are left to speculate on the challenges that lie ahead. Trailer footage hints that the air trial may explore pop-culture stereotypes surrounding witchcraft, potentially creating tension with Lillia’s views. Additionally, a scene featuring Agatha and Billy in a futuristic morgue has strengthened theories that if this is the earth trial, Rio Vidal, the coven’s green witch, could be revealed as Lady Death.

Final Thoughts

With just three episodes left, the stakes in Agatha All Along are rising for both Marvel and horror enthusiasts. While some mysteries have been uncovered, many others linger. How will Billy’s revelation impact the power dynamics within the coven, and will they be able to unite and face their next trial?
