It was recently confirmed that another Scream movie is in the works with Courteney Cox as the only legacy cast member returning (so far). Not only has Cox’s involvement been confirmed, but Hayden Panettiere will reprise her role as Kirby Reed from Scream 4 in the next film.
Panettiere is known for her role as cheerleader Claire Bennett in the NBC superhero series Heroes. Her return to the franchise will be her first onscreen appearance since her starring role in the musical drama Nashville (2012-2018).
Scream 6 is the working title of the upcoming film, the sixth blood-soaked addition to the franchise and a sequel to this year’s film, simply titled Scream. Reprising their roles from the last film are Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, and Jenna Ortega. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will return with writers Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt.
Collider quotes Cox from an interview with Entertainment Tonight’s Matt Cohen. “I don’t know about contracts and where things are, but I’ll tell you in the script—it’s a really good one. You actually have to be killed if you talk about it, so I’m not gonna say anything.”
The last film, released earlier this year, was both a critical and box office success. With a budget of $24 million, the film raked in $140 million at the box office. Scream (2022) received a 76 percent certified fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Released in 1996, the original Scream film is credited with breathing new life into the horror genre.
Gillett recently told Empire that Scream 6 “[…] has to be willing to risk it all in order to subvert all of those expectations. And we’re so far down the rabbit hole of Scream movies, that it’s all up for grabs at this point.”
Scream 6 is currently set for a March 31st, 2023 release date.
