Netflix Has Ordered a Sequel to Their Kaiju Hit Troll!

There are few certainties in life. Aside from the proverbial death and taxes, very little in our world is set in stone, but if I had to propose a third member of that exclusive club, it would be this: successful horror movies get sequels. That’s just how the genre works, so it should come as no surprise that according to an exclusive report in Variety, Netflix has just ordered a sequel to their hit kaiju film Troll. And as a kaiju fanatic, I couldn’t be happier. I had a really good time with this movie, so I’d love nothing more than a second rip-roaring adventure with these giant mythological creatures.

To be fair, sequels are notoriously hard to get right, so despite my excitement for Troll 2 (as it’s being called at the moment), I also know this film has the potential to be a kaiju-sized disappointment. But I don’t think that’s going to happen. According to Variety’s report, the movie is going to be made by the same people who worked on the first one, and that bodes really well for it. Netflix is bringing back the same director (Roar Uthaug), writer (Espen Aukan), and producers (Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud), and the way I see it, if anybody can make a worthy sequel to Troll, it has to be these guys.

A giant footprint made by a troll

At this point, we don’t know much about the plot of Troll 2, but the producers have given us a tiny hint of what we can expect from the film. They said it will be “again spinning on a Norwegian fairy tale figure, played, directed and produced by Norwegians.” Admittedly, those words don’t really tell us much, but they seem to imply that the movie is going to tackle some element of Norwegian mythology and lore that we didn’t see in the first Troll.

According to the report, Troll 2 is set to start shooting sometime next year, but it doesn’t have a release date yet.
