When I watch creepy preview clips from upcoming horror movies, I generally have at least a vague idea of what I’m in for. Sure, I obviously don’t know exactly what’s going to happen, but I usually know what the films are about, so I can more or less guess what kinds of scares to expect. But when I saw this clip from the upcoming thriller Peppergrass, I was actually pretty surprised.
See, the clip seems to imply that there’s some sort of monster hiding in the darkness, but as far as I can tell, Peppergrass isn’t a monster movie. It’s supposed to be a revenge thriller about a restaurateur who tries to steal “a priceless truffle,” but apparently, their plan doesn’t go quite as smoothly as they hoped it would. That makes the film seem like a purely human story, so a monster is just about the last thing you’d expect.
What’s more, co-director Steven Garbas also made a brief statement about the movie, and in it, he said that it “was written to be a bit of a horror genre tour, where the protagonist, Eula, walks the viewer through a heist, survival, and revenge film.” Once again, there’s no mention of a monster, so I’m really not sure what to make of this clip.
And you know what? I absolutely love it. Horror is often at its best when it keeps you on your toes, and this Peppergrass clip does exactly that. Not only does it build up the tension and suspense pretty well, but it also has me super curious to find out what’s really going on here. That’s a tough combination to beat, so after watching this clip, I’m much more interested in the movie than I was before.
Peppergrass is set to hit digital platforms on June 16.
