Netflix Has Ordered an Animated Stranger Things Series

Ever since Stranger Things aired its first season back in 2016, it’s been one of the most popular shows in the world. It immediately captured the hearts of viewers both inside and outside the horror fan community, and in the almost seven years since it debuted, it’s become a genuine pop culture phenomenon. Sadly, the upcoming fifth season is supposed to be the end of the line for the show, but it’s not going to be the end of the Stranger Things universe. Last year, news broke that the show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, were working on a live-action spinoff series and a stage play, and now, we’ve learned that the universe will be expanding into other media as well.

Netflix has ordered an animated series set in the Stranger Things world, and while plot details are currently being kept under wraps, the little bit we do know about this project is intriguing. The Duffer brothers put out a statement about it, and here’s what they said:

We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling. We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with—the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues…

Admittedly, that doesn’t really tell us much about this animated spinoff, but I think the comparison to Saturday morning cartoons is pretty interesting. Does that mean the show is going to be geared more toward kids? Or are the Duffer brothers simply saying that an animated series reminds them of the animated shows they used to watch when they were kids? Or is it something else?

We can’t be sure at this point, but whatever the statement means, it sure is intriguing. I’m a ‘90s kid, so I love the idea of bringing a “Saturday morning cartoons” vibe to Stranger Things. I can’t wait to find out how the show does that, and of course, it’s always good news when we learn that we’re getting more Stranger Things.
