Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie Finally Has a Release Date

If you’re a horror gamer, you’re going to love this news. Hell, even if you’re like me and you haven’t touched a horror video game since Resident Evil 2 (and I mean the original version, not the remake!), this news is still pretty exciting. Blumhouse has just announced a release date for their upcoming adaptation of the popular video game series Five Nights at Freddy’s, and it’ll be here just in time for Halloween.

According to a recent Instagram post, the movie is set to hit both theaters and Peacock on October 27, and it’s going to be about a security guard at a restaurant called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza who gets more than he bargained for during his first night on the job. The post doesn’t say much more about the film’s plot, but if you know anything about the Five Nights at Freddy’s video games, it’s not hard to figure out what’s going to make the main character’s night go south. In the games, the pizza place features Chuck. E. Cheese-esque animatronic figures, and at night, they come to life and engage in deadly hijinks.

Like I said before, I haven’t played any horror video games in ages, but I’m really excited to see this movie. The premise just sounds amazing, so if done right, it could be the perfect mix of childlike whimsy and abject terror. And if there’s any studio that can pull it off, it’s Blumhouse. Sure, not everything they touch turns to gold, but they have as good a track record as just about anybody, so I for one am more than willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. At the very least, I’m sure Five Nights at Freddy’s will be better than the very similarly themed Nicolas Cage film Willy’s Wonderland, and that alone is reason enough to give it a shot.
