Beware of Dario Argento This Summer

If you love classic giallo films and you’re in the New York area, get ready for “Beware of Dario Argento: a 20-Film Retrospective,” hosted by Film at Lincoln Center and Cinecittà. The retrospective is set for June 17–29.

This summer’s retrospective includes the classic Suspiria, which was the first of Argento’s Three Mothers trilogy, followed by Inferno and Mother of Tears. Both Suspiria and Inferno will debut new 4K restorations by Cinecittà. Other films include Tenebrae, Opera, Phenomena, Trauma, The Stendhal Syndrome, The Black Cat, Dracula 3D, and Argento’s made-for-television feature, Do You Like Hitchcock?

Argento will also appear for select screenings where he will introduce the films and conduct Q&As. The retrospective line-up will also include the North American premiere of Argento’s latest film, his first in 10 years, Dark Glasses, distributed by Shudder. Dark Glasses debuted at the Berlin International Film Festival in February and stars Asia Argento, the director’s daughter. All screenings take place at the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center.

Suspiria was reimagined in a 2018 film by Luca Guadagnino starring Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, and Mia Goth. If you are not familiar with giallo films and love slasher movies, many iconic slasher classics incorporate elements of giallo. Argento is credited with popularizing giallo with his classics The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970) and Deep Red (1975).A shadow of hand holding a knife over a woman's face whose eyes are wide with fear and mouth open as if to scream.

The retrospective is presented in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute and sponsored by MUBI and was organized by Madeline Whittle and Tyler Wilson of Film at Lincoln Center, and by Camilla Cormanni, Paola Ruggiero, and Maro Cicala at Cinecittà, which also co-produces the festival.
