Jason Voorhees does not need an origin story. He needs a machete and a fog machine. That has always been the appeal, a nearly wordless force of nature stalking Crystal Lake, and for decades every attempt to expand him into something bigger, a robot, outer space, a crossover with Freddy Krueger, has flattened the very simplicity that made him scary. So when the Jason Universe team promises “a thrilling lineup of new projects” beyond what fans have already seen, the interesting question is not what’s coming. It’s whether this round of expansion finally understands what made the character work in the first place.
There is reason for cautious optimism. The short film Sweet Revenge and Jason’s arrival in Dead by Daylight already reintroduced the character on his own terms rather than forcing a reboot down the multiplex’s throat, and the upcoming Peacock and A24 series Crystal Lake is doing something the franchise has never really tried: building an entire show around Pamela Voorhees rather than her son.
Building a Universe Without Losing the Slasher
Speaking to a trade outlet, Jason Universe producer Robbie Barsamian framed the current run of activity as only the beginning. “We’ve been busy behind the scenes laying the foundation that everyone is finally starting to see come to life, but this is just the tip of the iceberg,” he said, adding that the team has “a thrilling lineup of new projects that we can’t wait to share more details on soon.”
That framing matters because franchise universes so often mean diluted horror: more characters, more mythology, less menace. Barsamian’s other comment, that the goal is to “give fans fresh takes on what they love most about Jason and continue to expand his world in authentic ways,” is the tell. Success here depends entirely on whether “authentic” means honoring the slow dread of a killer who never runs, or whether it means turning Crystal Lake into a shared universe with a flowchart.
Pamela Voorhees Gets Her Origin First
Crystal Lake is the clearest test case so far. The series stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees and Callum Vinson as a young Jason, and it’s set to tell how a grieving mother became the franchise’s original killer before her son ever put on a mask. That is a genuinely different entry point than most slasher prequels attempt: centering the human, pre-mythology version of the villain instead of the icon.
The smartest thing the Jason Universe has done so far is sequence it this way, letting audiences meet the woman before the legend, instead of rushing straight to hockey masks and body counts. Crystal Lake premieres October 15 on Peacock.
Beyond the series, the team has previously teased a new movie and a new video game as priorities without offering updates on either. Whatever the “thrilling lineup” ends up including, Friday the 13th has survived twelve movies, a crossover, and a reboot by staying simple. The real test for this new wave isn’t scale. It’s restraint.
