The Evil Dead franchise has always had a mythology problem: its sequels don’t quite agree on the rules. The original film, Evil Dead II, and Army of Darkness each treat the lore slightly differently, and the modern entries (Evil Dead 2013 and Evil Dead Rise) operate as parallel stories more than true continuations. Evil Dead Burn may be the film that finally threads all of it together. In a conversation with Out Magazine, star Hunter Doohan revealed that his character in the film connects directly to the central figure of Sam Raimi’s original trilogy, and that the connection is not cosmetic.
Doohan plays Joseph, a character he describes as “researching the lore in the story.” The key detail: “Joseph is working on a book about his grandfather’s research. His grandfather knew Professor Knowby.” Professor Raymond Knowby is the figure at the center of the original Evil Dead mythology, the archaeologist who found the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis in the ruins of Castle Kandar, recorded his findings on a tape recorder, and brought the book to the cabin in the woods where Ash Williams and his friends would eventually suffer for it. The tape recorder in the original film is Knowby’s voice. His research is the reason everything in the trilogy happens.
What the Knowby Connection Actually Means
Professor Knowby appears in Evil Dead II as a character in addition to just a voice, and the mythology around him (the Necronomicon, Castle Kandar, the Kandarian Deadite curse) is the franchise’s deepest lore layer. Bringing Knowby’s lineage into Evil Dead Burn is not a cameo reference: it is a structural decision about how the franchise history connects. If Joseph’s grandfather knew Knowby, and Joseph is now “researching the lore,” then Evil Dead Burn is building a story that ties the academic tradition of the original trilogy directly to the new threat the film presents.
Doohan confirmed the scope of the connection in his Out Magazine chat: “I loved how this script not only ties back a little bit to Evil Dead Rise, but this movie connects the lore through the whole franchise, which I found really exciting.” The Deadites in Evil Dead Rise were summoned through a vinyl record found in a basement. Evil Dead Burn inherits that connection and reaches further back, to the tape recorder in the original cabin, to the book, and to the man who first touched it.
The Film and What Awaits
Directed by Sébastien Vanicek, Evil Dead Burn arrives in theaters on July 10, 2026. The official synopsis: after the loss of her husband, a woman seeks solace with her in-laws in their secluded family home. As one by one they are transformed into Deadites, the gathering becomes a family reunion from hell, and she discovers that the vows she took in life live on even in death. That framing, grief and family obligation weaponized against the survivor, continues the franchise’s recent interest in horror that emerges from domestic spaces and intimate relationships rather than isolated cabin scenarios.
The Knowby thread gives horror fans something to look for beyond the Deadite chaos. If the franchise mythology is being treated seriously enough to tie the original trilogy’s central academic figure into a 2026 theatrical release, then Evil Dead Burn is making a case for itself as more than the next installment. It is positioning itself as a connector, which is the kind of horror sequel that earns long-term franchise value.
