Have you ever thought the world felt devoid of a Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Motel Hell, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Waiting For Guffman mashup? Like someone out in Hollywood just didn’t understand your need for musical horror comedies? Well, your love for Anna and the Apocalypse and Little Shop of Horrors has been vividly felt, and horror filmmaker and comedian Ricky Glore wants to deliver your new favorite ghoulish sing-a-long with the announcement of his next project: Open House.
Last year, Glore released super-indie film festival favorite All Your Friends Are Dead, a psychological slasher film developing from the dreadful aspects of adulthood not turning out quite as its main character planned. His first feature was a sullen look at maturity through the eyes of someone who peaked in high school that beamed with dryly humourous situations, touching moments of poignancy, and lots and lots of gory murder too.
With Open House, Glore unleashes a new form of adult responsibility horror: buying property in today’s market. While that may be a horrifying idea all on its own, Open House involves a set of vicious realtors and a pair of conniving squatters. The story concerns a homeless mother and daughter who dupe realtors into showing them vacant homes they can case and break into for an overnight stay. The con goes sideways when one seemingly eager realtor couple refuses to let them leave after a showing.
Open House is currently in pre-production, shooting at the infamous haunted hideaway Bobby Mackey’s Music World in Wilder, Kentucky. The location, once a slaughterhouse and prohibition-era speakeasy, was featured on an episode of Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures and is known for its legacy of murder, suicide, and cult activity. The once prolific nightclub has also been dubbed “Hell’s Gate.”
The film has already attracted a pair of notable executive producers in P.J. Starks (13 Slays Till Xmas) and Gorilla Cinema Presents’ CEO Jacob Trevino. Nicholas Hiance will also reprise his title as Director of Photography and return as an executive producer, having served those roles on All Your Friends Are Dead with fellow Open House producers Chris Morris and Mike Finchum. Meanwhile, Chicago Fire actor Timmy H. Barron joins Ali Delianides (All Your Friends Are Dead) and Lisa Walton (When the Night Falls) in leading the cast. Jeff Award-winning composer David Kornfeld will provide the score. While special effects will be courtesy of Trevor Thompson, fresh off the blood-soaked Malum, and, finally, Ashley Meenach (Hauntology) will handle makeup and wardrobe.
All that’s left is you.
Like his previous microbudget film, Glore is crowdfunding Open House on Kickstarter to achieve his vision. From everything he divulged to us during this week’s podcast episode, it sounds profoundly fun and original. Glore told us that the Kickstarter goal is set at fifteen thousand dollars, a shoestring budget for a film of this scale, and it’s legitimately just enough to pay his talented team of actors and crew. During an interview last year, Glore mentioned his macabre musical but held many details close to the chest. You can tell this is a passion project for Glore, whose excitement for his sophomore feature is catchy, just like I bet the songs in the film will be.
Please check out Open House on Kickstarter, and if you like what you see, consider donating to the film. Perks include social media shoutouts from writer-director Ricky Glore, limited edition Blu-rays of All Your Friends Are Dead and Open House, special thanks and producer credits, and even a walk-on role to play a victim in the film. And, above everything, you’ll be helping a unique voice in horror create something wildly original that you and your friends can enjoy for years to come.
