Focus Features Just Launched a Webpage for Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu!

We’ve been hearing for some time now that Robert Eggers wants to remake the landmark 1922 silent film Nosferatu, but up until pretty recently, the project’s chances of actually happening haven’t looked very good. In fact, about a year ago, Eggers himself gave a very grim assessment of those chances in an interview with Indiewire: “Dude, I don’t know. It’s fallen apart twice…I’ve been trying so hard, [a]nd I just wonder if Murnau’s ghost is telling me, like, you should stop.”

But in the past few months, the tide seems to have turned. We’ve been hearing about multiple actors signing on to the movie, and earlier this month, Deadline reported that production had finally started. And now, we’ve gotten yet another piece of encouraging news about the film: its distributor, Focus Features, has launched an official webpage for the project.

As of this writing, the webpage doesn’t tell us too much about the movie, but the little bit it does reveal is pretty exciting. For starters, the page confirms the film’s cast, and let me tell you, it’s absolutely stacked. It includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, so you can bet that the acting in Nosferatu is going to be top-notch.

On top of that, the webpage also gives us a little synopsis of the movie. Admittedly, this synopsis isn’t entirely new, but it’s intriguing enough that it’s worth another look:

Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.

To me, that synopsis sounds like the film is going to center around an almost Bram Stoker’s Dracula-esque love/obsession story, and I’m all for it. Remakes need to tell their stories in new ways audiences haven’t seen before, and while Nosferatu has always been a bit of a love story, it looks like Eggers is going to take that idea and run with it.

Now, that cast list and plot synopsis are cool, but for my money, neither of them is the best thing about this new Nosferatu webpage. Rather, for my money, the most exciting thing about it is that it exists. It gives us official confirmation that the film is actually happening, and to be frank, that’s really all I need right now. I have complete faith that Eggers will do a great job with this time-honored version of the Dracula story, so the mere fact that this movie is becoming a reality is enough to make my day.
