Hear No Evil With The Unheard

When I first got back into writing nearly three years ago, albeit for a very bad publication, the first film I did my review on was The Beach House. It was a film I thoroughly enjoyed. It brought social commentary and cosmic horror hand in hand. I’ve thought about this film from time to time in the three years since discussing it, wondering whether or not Jeffrey A. Brown would make another film. Just a few hours ago I was told the trailer for his next project The Unheard had dropped and I was excited immediately.

Chloe lays on a surgery table as a doctor approaches her left ear with a large needle

Chloe Grayden (Lachlan Watson) undergoes an experimental procedure to restore her hearing. So she begins to suffer from auditory hallucinations related to the disappearance of her mother.

My second favorite installment in the V/H/S franchise is hands down V/H/S/2, or S-VHS, whichever you prefer to call it. One of the segments in 2, “Phase 1 Clinical Trials” is my third favorite segment out of the entire franchise. My biggest gripe with “Phase 1” is that I wanted them to go more into it. Granted the ending of “Phase 1” wraps the story up, but that didn’t stop me from wanting more. The Unheard looks to take my wanting of more of this type of story, and amps it up even more.

The trailer for The Unheard starts off subtly sweet. Chloe gets a surgery done that restores her hearing, which prompts her to listen to enjoy the sounds we all take for granted like the popping of popcorn or the faint fizzing of a carbonated beverage. Slowly the film devolves into madness as Chloe runs into a very old friend, which is accompanied by sounds of her mother. From there an element of found footage seems to be introduced, when Chloe uncovers old films of her and her mother.

It’s really up in the air which direction The Unheard will take, but writers Shawn and Michael Rasmussen have a fairly decent track record with projects. Crawl was an excellent and tense creature feature, while The Ward was a fairly interesting asylum horror piece. Between the Rasussens and Brown I think we’re going to be set up for quite a fascinating, and terrifying, film.

The Unheard will be screaming on Shudder March 31st.
