One of my favorite genre movies of 2020 was a little Shudder Original called The Beach House. It’s a great eco-horror film from first-time director Jeffrey A. Brown, and now, Deadline is reporting that Brown is teaming up with Shudder once again for his second full-length feature, The Unheard. Here’s what the film is about:
The Unheard follows 20-year-old Chloe Grayden (Lachlan Watson), who after undergoing an experimental procedure to restore her damaged hearing, begins to suffer from auditory hallucinations seemingly related to the mysterious disappearance of her mother.
Admittedly, that premise is a bit too vague to inspire much excitement, so the real draw here is the news that Jeffrey A. Brown is directing another movie. As I said, his feature debut The Beach House was fantastic, so I’m super stoked to see his follow-up.
That being said, there is one big difference between these two films that I need to mention. Brown also wrote The Beach House, but he didn’t write The Unheard, and for some people, that could seem like a bit of a red flag. The Beach House had an excellent script, so we don’t know how good Brown’s next movie is going to be with a different screenwriter.
But let me assure you, there’s nothing to worry about. The Unheard is being written by Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, and although they don’t have too many credits under their belt, the last film they wrote was an absolute winner: 2019’s Crawl. In fact, that movie was one of the biggest pleasant surprises in recent memory, so while it would’ve been cool to see Jeffrey A. Brown write his latest film too, I’m not worried about the change. The Rasmussens know how to craft a great horror script, so I’m confident they’ll knock it out of the park once again.
The Unheard is scheduled to hit Shudder on March 31.
