Werewolf by Night Director Is Helming a Remake of Them!

If you’re a fan of giant monsters or 1950s sci-fi, I’ve got some great news for you. Deadline is reporting that Michael Giacchino, the Oscar-winning composer and the director of Werewolf by Night, is going to be making his feature directorial debut, and he’s chosen a great project to work on. He’s going to be remaking the sci-fi classic Them!, and I couldn’t be happier.

A few months ago, I wrote an article recommending five great sci-fi horror films from the 1950s, and Them! was one of my picks. It’s basically about a bunch of ants that grow to gigantic proportions after being exposed to radiation, and it’s been one of my favorite horror movies ever since I was a little kid. I grew up watching and loving this film, so I absolutely can’t wait to see Giacchino’s take on it.

At this point, some of you are probably wondering why I’m so excited about this news. Horror remakes are hit or miss at best (and that’s being very generous), so why would I want to see one of my childhood favorites almost certainly get butchered like so many other beloved classics?

I’ll tell you why. Like I said before, Michael Giacchino directed the Disney Plus MCU special Werewolf by Night, and it was fantastic. In fact, if it was a little bit longer, I might’ve even put it in my top 10 movies of the year. So while I’m not always a fan of remakes, I’m down for just about anything Giacchino wants to do. And since he’s chosen a story I already know and love, I’m fully confident that he’ll knock his feature debut out of the park.

At this point, we don’t know when the remake of Them! will be coming out. According to Deadline, Giacchino is “currently meeting with writers in hopes of getting the production up quite soon,” so it’s most likely going to be a while before we get to see it.
