Freeze Trailer Is a Lovecraftian Horror Fan’s Dream

I’m a huge fan of Lovecraftian horror. I’ve read a bunch of Lovecraft’s stories, and I absolutely eat up films that riff on the themes and ideas he popularized. So from the moment I heard about Freeze, I knew I had to check out the trailer. Not only is this an obvious homage to all things Lovecraftian, but the movie also won Best Feature Film at the 2022 H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival last month, so I was pretty sure it would be right up my alley. And from the looks of it, I was 100% right. Here’s what the movie is about:

On a rescue mission to the North Pole to retrieve an old friend and his lost expedition crew, Captain Mortimer gets more than he bargained for when his ship is frozen into the ice sheet and set upon by bloodthirsty fish-creatures. Mortimer and his surviving crew flee the ship, beginning a treacherous journey to find safety in a frozen desolate wilderness. Suffering from starvation, frostbite and a slow madness, they find shelter inside a snowy mountain, but are they as safe as they think, or have they entered the heart of the creature’s lair.

From that plot synopsis alone, you can tell that this is pretty much a Lovecraft fan’s dream come true. The story features a plot that riffs on At the Mountains of Madness, a discovery of bizarre fish creatures, and a slow descent into madness, so what more could we want?

Sure, there’s more to Lovecraft than just those three things, but that combination sounds pretty awesome. And in case there’s any doubt left, the trailer adds even more Lovecraftian legitimacy to Freeze. Most notably, the fish monsters look great, there’s a book that’s almost certainly the Necronomicon, and, best of all, someone in the trailer even says, “They lost themselves in these mountains of madness.”

Once I heard those words, I was completely sold. Granted, I was already all in before that line, but it sealed the deal for me. Freeze looks like an absolute blast, and I can’t wait to see it. Unfortunately, though, we don’t quite know when the film is going to come out. It doesn’t seem to have an official release date yet, but once we find out, we’ll be sure to let you all know.

  1. For a second I thought this was that canned horror release of the Aqua Man Creatures from the Trench they looked similar.

But now that I see it’s a Lovecraftian release I can breathe a sigh of relief. This looks like someone took the deep ones and modernized it can’t wait for release.
