When I was a kid, I used to love Are You Afraid of the Dark?. It was one of my favorite TV shows back in the day, and it’s a big part of the reason why I love horror so much as an adult. In fact, I’ve been wanting a more mature version of that series for a while now, and after seeing the new trailer for Netflix’s upcoming show The Midnight Club, I think that wish is finally going to become a reality. Here’s what the series is going to be about:
At a hospice for terminally ill young adults, eight patients come together every night at midnight to tell each other stories—and make a pact that the next of them to die will give the group a sign from the beyond. The Midnight Club is based on the 1994 novel of the same name as well as other works by Christopher Pike.
That premise sounds exactly like Are You Afraid of the Dark?, but I have to be honest, the similarity didn’t really hit me when I saw the first trailer for The Midnight Club. That trailer somewhat glossed over the fact that the show is about a storytelling club, but this new one makes it pretty explicit. And I absolutely love it. It gives the trailer a familiar, almost cozy feel that I think any horror-loving ‘90s kid is sure to appreciate.
On top of that, this trailer also shows us a bit more of the scares and atmosphere in The Midnight Club, and they’re just as good as we’ve come to expect from a Mike Flanagan TV series. I especially liked the scare at the end that involves a Nosferatu-esque shadow, so I can’t wait to see what else this show has in store for us.
The Midnight Club premieres on Netflix on October 7.
