Yesterday, we brought you news that Evil Dead Rise, the next movie in the Evil Dead franchise, is now going to get a theatrical release, and the report we cited in that article also gave us another bit of cool horror news: the next film in the Conjuring universe, The Nun 2, is set to hit theaters on September 8 next year. And you know what? I can’t wait to see it.
I know what you’re probably thinking. Why in the world would I be excited to see a sequel to The Nun? Well, let me tell you. For starters, a good follow-up to a bad first movie wouldn’t be unprecedented. Ouija: Origin of Evil and Annabelle: Creation both did it, so The Nun 2 isn’t automatically doomed. What’s more, Annabelle: Creation was also in the Conjuring universe, so if the franchise did this once before, there’s no reason why they can’t do it again.
Last but not least, consider what Ouija: Origin of Evil and Annabelle: Creation have in common: they were both helmed by good genre directors. Mike Flanagan did the Ouija follow-up, and David F. Sandberg directed the second Annabelle film. And who’s going to be directing The Nun 2?
It’s none other than Michael Chaves, the man behind The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, which I really enjoyed. This guy knows how to make a good horror movie (and a good one in this universe no less!), so the way I see it, the stars just might be lining up for The Nun 2 to be way better than its predecessor.
Granted, Chaves also directed the stinker The Curse of La Llorona, so this is by no means guaranteed. But then again, nothing is ever guaranteed in the movie world. You never really know if you’re going to like a film until you actually sit down and watch it. All you can really do is find reasons to hope it’ll be good, and despite how bad The Nun was, we have good reasons to be optimistic about The Nun 2.
I’m a huge fan of the nun. I’m a huge fan of valak the demon.
