Burial Trailer Previews a Creepy, Possibly Supernatural War Thriller

What do you get when you transpose Dog Soldiers into a creepy World War II setting? You get Burial, an upcoming IFC Midnight movie that just dropped a trailer, and I absolutely can’t wait to see it. Here’s what the film is about:

In the last days of WWII, a band of Allied soldiers trafficking Hitler’s remains out of Germany are ambushed by Nazi Wehrwolf fighters.

You might be wondering what exactly a “Nazi Wehrwolf fighter” is, and if you are, you’re not alone. I had never heard of them either before seeing this trailer, so I had to do a bit of research to find out just what these characters would be up against. Unfortunately, they weren’t real werewolves, but rather German soldiers who operated behind enemy lines during World War II.

So on the surface, this looks like it’s going to be a rather mundane war thriller, and everything I’ve read about it seems to confirm that. However, when you watch the trailer, it seems like there’s a bit more to Burial than just a bunch of sneaky Nazi soldiers. There are a couple of times when it looks like there are real monsters (maybe even werewolves!) in this movie, so I suspect that it’s going to delve into supernatural territory a bit more than most people are expecting.

And if you think about it, that makes perfect sense. For starters, IFC Midnight is a horror distributor, so I wouldn’t expect this film to be just a straight up war thriller. Sure, not all their movies are supernatural, but a creature feature is much more their thing than a simple war film. Secondly, it’s a known fact that Hitler was very interested in the occult, so a movie about his corpse is just ripe for a bit of genuine monster action.

Either way though, the Burial trailer is pretty awesome. It’s creepy, it’s well shot, and it previews a really intriguing story, so whatever this film is, I’m excited to see it.

Burial hits VOD and limited theaters on September 2.
