Written and Directed by Sir Alan Parker, Angel Heart, the Horror-Noir starring Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler, Sin City, The Expendables) and the legendary Robert De Niro (The Godfather: Part II, Raging Bull) with Lisa Bonet (High Fidelity, Enemy of the State) and Charlotte Rampling (45 Years, Swimming Pool, Melancholia), comes to 4K Ultra HD with a gorgeous Limited Edition Steelbook from Lionsgate, exclusively at Best Buy on July 12th.
Rourke stars as Harry Angel, a down on his luck Brooklyn detective hired by a mysterious stranger named Louis Cyphre (De Niro) to track down a missing singer named Johnny Favorite. His search takes him to the streets of Harlem, jazz clubs in New Orleans, and the swamps of Louisiana as he discovers a dark underbelly of voodoo in this unforgettable thriller. You’ll never look at boiled eggs the same way again after witnessing the iconic scene of Cyphre snacking.
While it wasn’t a hit when it was released back in 1987, Angel Heart has stuck with people and in the years since has inspired other films and properties, particularly in its use of fractured narrative, including Christopher Nolan’s Memento and 2K Games’ Bioshock: Infinite, among others. I first watched it as a teen and enjoyed the dark supernatural elements that are still very grounded in reality. It’s an adaptation of William Hjortsberg’s 1978 novel Falling Angel, with Hjortsberg and Parker making changes to the setting as it moved to script form.
Special Features included in the 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital Steelbook Edition are an Introduction to Angel Heart by Screenwriter-Director Alan Parker, Audio Commentary with Alan Parker, an Interview excerpt from Cineastes Des Annees featuring the Director, News Features, Personality Profiles, Additional Interviews, Behind-the-Scenes Footage, Original Teaser Trailer, A Background in Voodoo Featurette, and a Behind-the-Scenes Gallery.
