Halle Berry Returns to Horror in Mother Land

Deadline reported that Halle Berry has been cast in the upcoming supernatural horror thriller, Mother Land. This is the first horror film since the supernatural psychological horror film Gothika (2003).

Mother Land tells the story of a mother and her twin sons who have been stalked by an evil spirit for many years. The family’s survival is threatened when one of the boys questions whether the spirit is real.

Filmmaker Alexandre Aja(Crawl, The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D) is set to direct and co-produce with Berry. Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and Dan Levine producing for 21 Laps. Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby will write the screenplay. A woman looks frightened sits in the dark, looking as if she's been swimming or in a pool or shower.

Movieweb reports that Lionsgate describes Mother Land as an “elevated thriller,” and a take on elevated horror from filmmakers such as Jordan Peele (Get Out) and Robert Eggers (The Witch). Movieweb also quotes a statement issued by Lionsgate Production President Erin Westerman: “We’re so thrilled to be working again with Halle and Alex. Halle is a force on screen—she’s the perfect person to convey the psychological terror of this mother trying to protect her family. And who better than Alex to ratchet up the tension. Powerhouse producers 21 Laps are going to deliver an elevated thriller that will keep audiences on the edge of their seat.”

Berry recently starred in a sci-fi disaster film, Moonfall (2022), with Patrick Wilson, directed by Roland Emmerich. She also had her directorial debut with Netflix’s critically acclaimed sports drama Bruised (2022), which snagged the top spot on the streaming services’ most-watched list shortly after its release. Berry also stars in the film as a UFC fighter. Berry also stars in another Netflix film, a sci-fi movie called The Mothership, which is currently in post-production.

Contact Music quotes Berry saying that she would like to direct again in the future. “I am going to get behind the camera again. I can’t tell you what I’m doing for sure, for sure yet, but I definitely want to do it again. And I definitely will not act in it this time. Directing is large enough.”

No release date is set yet for Mother Land.
