Found footage is one of the most fascinating techniques in all of horror. When done right, it can make us feel like we’re watching real people go through real-life nightmares, and the format’s best movies are some of the scariest to ever grace the big screen (including, in my opinion, the scariest film of all time!). So when I first heard about the trailer for The Found Footage Phenomenon, I was really intrigued.
The movie is a documentary about the history and evolution of found footage, and it includes interviews with the filmmakers behind some of the best and most influential films the format has to offer.
That alone is enough to get me interested, and in a certain sense, the trailer is a bit unnecessary. Either you’re hooked or you’re not, so I don’t think that seeing a bunch of clips from the movie is going to change your mind if the idea of it doesn’t entice you.
But if you’re interested in learning about the history of this popular format, then the trailer for The Found Footage Phenomenon is really cool. See, hearing someone say there’s going to be a documentary about found footage movies is one thing, but actually seeing filmmakers talk about their films and the format as a whole is something else entirely.
I don’t know about you, but it whets my appetite and makes me want more. I want to keep hearing what these people have to say and learning about how they made their movies and why they made the choices they did, so I’m super excited to see this documentary.
And I’m happy to say that the wait won’t be too long. The Found Footage Phenomenon hits Shudder on May 19, so it’ll only be about two months until we get to continue the journey that this trailer began.
