The Lake Trailer Promises an Awesome New Kaiju Movie

I love monster movies. If you give me a man-eating creature stalking a bunch of innocent victims (or even a bunch of not-so-innocent ones!), I’m a happy man, and if you make the thing giant-sized, then I’m pretty much in heaven. This is quite possibly my favorite horror subgenre, so when I heard about the trailer for the upcoming Thai horror film The Lake, I knew I had to check it out.

Story details are scarce right now, but from what I can gather, the film seems to follow a fairly standard monster movie plot. A girl finds a strange egg in a field and brings it back to her town, and pretty soon a giant monster rises from a nearby lake and wreaks havoc as it goes in search of its missing egg.

We’ve seen that story play out about a million times before, so I’m guessing that the appeal of this film isn’t going to lie in its plot. Instead, it’ll have to excel in other areas, and if this trailer is any indication, that will be no problem at all.

Admittedly, since the trailer for The Lake is in Thai and it doesn’t have English subtitles, I’m not entirely sure what’s going on, but great giant monster action transcends all language barriers. You don’t need to understand what people are saying to appreciate a deadly creature going to town on its victims, so even without knowing what’s really happening, I’m confident that this is going to be an awesome kaiju film.

The monster in it reminds me a bit of a mix between a xenomorph and a T. rex, and while that may not sound like the most intuitive monster combination, it looks like it’s going to work just fine. This thing is big, it’s terrifying, and it’s ready to bust some heads, so I can’t wait to see it in all its glory.

The Lake hits theaters in Thailand on August 18, but it doesn’t have a stateside release date just yet. Hopefully, it’ll be getting one soon, and when it does, we’ll be sure to let you know about it.
