The Yellow Wallpaper Trailer Promises a Bonkers Descent Into Madness

I know what you might be thinking: with a name like The Yellow Wallpaper, how good can this movie really be? Well, I haven’t seen it yet, so I can’t say if it’s good or bad, but I can tell you one thing—the trailer is pretty intriguing, so The Yellow Wallpaper actually looks like it’s going to be much better than its strange title implies.

The film is an adaptation of Charlotte Perkin Gilman’s 1892 short story of the same name, and it’s about a woman named Jane whose husband takes her to the countryside to rest for the summer. While there, she becomes obsessed with the yellow wallpaper that adorns her bedroom, and she begins to write stories about a woman who’s trapped in it…and who she has to free.

If you ask me, that’s a fairly interesting premise, but I could see it turning out rather hokey in the wrong hands. It needs to be handled with skill and care, and the trailer for The Yellow Wallpaper promises to do just that.

For starters, the visuals and the acting are totally on-point, and the trailer is dripping with a dreary, almost dream-like atmosphere for the first minute and a half. It subtly tells us that there’s something dreadfully wrong with this entire setup, so even though nothing particularly horrific happens during that time, we know this apparent calm can’t last long.

Then, at about the 90-second mark, the tone changes entirely. Jane delivers one of the creepiest lines I’ve heard in a while, and the horror floodgates open. We see a few glimpses of the woman’s descent into madness, and it’s awesome. Granted, we don’t know exactly how far this movie will go with the horror, but if these few moments are any indication, it just might get bonkers.

We’ll only know for sure when we see the film, and thankfully, we’ll be able to do that very soon. The Yellow Wallpaper hits VOD on March 29, so here’s hoping it lives up to the promise of its excellent trailer.
