Shudder has released an eye-popping new trailer for sci-fi-horror-comedy The Seed ahead of its premiere on the streaming platform this March. This one’s been on my radar for a while after seeing the poster for The Seed last fall and including it in the TBD portion of our upcoming features list last October. We’re happy to announce the film will release on the platform this March, and the trailer looks intense.
The Seed tells the story of childhood best friends Deidre (Vikings’ Lucy Martin), Heather (Resident Evil: Apocalypse’s Sophie Vavasseur), and (Suspicion’s Chelsea Edge) Charlotte as they reconnect for a relaxing getaway in the Mojave Desert. With an impending meteor shower and remote poolside fun, the girls intend to use this time to acquire more followers to their social media channel. Instead, a fallen meteorite harboring an alien creature has other plans. The being plops into their pool like a stork delivering a bundle of joy and a strange appeal produces an array of emotional responses from the girls. The trailer becomes hypersexual, something akin to Society meets Species, and the girls find themselves battling for survival. The images of extreme violence, blood dripping eyes, and rampant weirdness are enough to entice any viewer.
This fiercely provocative trailer only strengthens my excitement for The Seed, mostly because I like seeing this newly recurring trope of vapid Instagrammers getting bloodied up in horror films and television. The Seed does spark some resemblance to last year’s American Horror Stories episode “The Naughty List” about video-bloggers whose pranks go too far and incur the wrath of Danny Trejo. While The Seed doesn’t offer up any Machete Kills moments, I still think there’s plenty of horror fun and WTF moments to add the film to your watch list next month. It’s gonna be weird, and I can’t wait.
The Seed will premiere exclusively on Shudder on March 10.
