Morbius Trailer Previews a Horrific New Superhero

We’ve seen superhero movies venture into horror territory before. We’ve even seen vampire superheroes, so at first glance, nothing about this new Morbius trailer might seem all that groundbreaking. It might seem like just another bland attempt to trick horror fans into spending their hard-earned cash on a comic book film, but if you just give it a chance, you’ll see that there’s actually a lot to love here. While this movie is obviously not going to be a full-blown scare-fest, it does look like it’s going to feature some really fun horror that will set it apart from its superhero peers.

In fact, I’d even say this looks like a real horror movie, not just a comic book film with a few horror-adjacent elements. For starters, Morbius himself is a legit monster, and when he vamps out, it’s a thing of horrific beauty. What’s more, this trailer also has some genuine horror scenes. To take just one example, at about the one-minute mark, we see a group of men in a ship get attacked by what we assume is Morbius. If I didn’t know any better, I might think this sequence came out of a James Wan or Mike Flanagan movie. Sure, it doesn’t show us anything we haven’t seen a million times before, but it looks well-made enough that I’m really looking forward to seeing what other terrifying treats this film has in store for us.

On top of that, this Morbius trailer also shows us something genuinely new in the vampire world: it visualizes the hero’s powers in a unique way. For instance, it shows his radar abilities as a blueish shimmer moving out all around him, and when he flies, the air changes in some really cool and colorful ways. It’s tough to put these visual flares into words, but when you see them, you’ll know why they have me so excited. They just look amazing, so I can’t wait to see more of them when I watch the movie.

And thankfully, that wait is almost over. Morbius was originally scheduled to hit theaters over a year ago, but now, after about a million release date changes, it looks like it’s finally going to come out in just a few short months. It’ll be in theaters on January 28, and you can bet I’m going to be first in line to see it on opening night.
