One of the most beloved horror movies of the last decade was Fede Alvarez’s 2016 hit Don’t Breathe. It was a super tense thriller that turned the home invasion subgenre completely on its head, and fans have been waiting years for a sequel. Thankfully, Don’t Breathe 2 is just over a month away, and this past week we got our first trailer for the much-anticipated follow-up. Here’s the plot synopsis:
“In Don’t Breathe, Norman Nordstrom (Stephen Lang) was underestimated by everyone because of his blindness: he revealed an unflinching will to survive and get what he wants…but also a monstrous, evil side of his personality, as nothing—no person or conscience—will stand in his way. Now, in Don’t Breathe 2, eight years later, Nordstrom lives with 11-year-old Phoenix; he has recreated the family that was stolen from him by a drunk driver and has found the twisted justice he’s always felt was his due. When intruders once again come to his home, this time focused on Phoenix, Norman will reveal for a second time what’s hidden inside him…and again, it will be in new and unexpected ways.”
From the looks of it, Don’t Breathe 2 is going to have everything that made the first one so successful. This trailer showcases all the tense action that fans could want, and I especially liked the part where Norman cuts the power and says, “Now you are gonna see what I see.” Stephen Lang delivers that line with the perfect mix of boiling anger and disciplined reserve, and the cat and mouse game that follows is pure thriller gold.
But don’t expect this movie to just be a rehash of the original. The trailer also suggests that Don’t Breathe 2 will have a few new tricks up its sleeve as well. For example, the opening scene shows Norman training Phoenix to escape dangerous situations, so it appears that we’ll get to see a bit of what Norman is like when he’s not fighting off home invaders.
On top of that, there’s a line about halfway through the trailer where one of the characters tells Phoenix that she should be afraid of Norman, and I’m really curious to find out why. He’s almost certainly not referring to the secrets Norman (quite literally) had in his closet in the first film, so I’m looking forward to learning even more dark truths about the character’s past.
This one-two punch of old favorites and new treats makes for one hell of a trailer, so I can’t wait to see the full movie. Don’t Breathe 2 hits theaters on August 13, and I’m already counting down the days until its release.
